Backbench is the largest open platform current affairs blog in the UK. Founded in 2012, we provide a space for students and young professionals to have their say about current affairs.

All our content is maintained by a group of brilliant young journalists, who volunteer a bit of their time each week to gain unrivalled editorial experience.

Indeed, the Backbench editorial team is a proven training ground for talented future journalists. Previous members of the team have gone on to work for the BBC, ITV News, the Press Association, the Telegraph, the Evening Standard, and the New Statesman.

The vast majority of our editors are students, so we usually appoint at least five new editors every academic year. Applications typically open in June or July.

Prior experience of writing for Backbench is desirable for any potential editor (join here), but extensive background experience is not required. We’re merely on the lookout for good writers who have a passion for current affairs.

To make sure you’re up to speed with all the latest editorial opportunities at Backbench, like us on Twitter and on Facebook.

If you want to be the next Robert Peston, Backbench is the best place to start.
